In this assignment, I am to understand the creation of a Fire Shader. Using personal reference images of a burning candle, I am to recreate it in the 3d world. This process requires observational skill in understanding the movement of fire and how fire acts as a light source.

The Shader is created using PRman shader language, the movement of the fire was created using Maya itself.

Beside fire, I also ventured into creating a translucent effect on the candle using Mental Ray. I basically use the Mental Ray SSS simple shader which give a fairly good result.

It was a fun assignment as I felt I did learn alot from just a simple recreation of a candle.

On the left is my Final Render. Flame rendered with Renderman and the Candle was rendered with MentalRay. I used After Effects to composite the two elements and did a little glow on the fire itself.

Here is my second version of the flame animation. The challenge was to try to create a flame movement with dynamics and here it is. The process is describe in scene setup. In this version instead of puting a Mental Ray Sub surface material on the candle, I have subed it with a RenderMan Shader provided my Prof. Malcolm.
